More insect species are supported by green roofs near public gardens

چکیده

Abstract Rapid urbanization is among the factors that decrease insect diversity. However, by offering suitable habitats, green roofs could lessen this adverse effect. Certain factors, like a nearby public garden, be useful predictor variables to analyze what extent can support communities. The study aimed measure diversity on intensive located near gardens and more isolated roofs, within an urban setting. Insect species richness, abundance, assemblages differed from those roofs. Results indicate will host species, especially pollinators, consequently lessening urbanization’s negative To properly understand how landscape impact communities future studies roofs’ biodiversity should consider their influence biodiversity. Implications for conservation planning establishment of roof would probably enhance in

Cost-Effectiveness of Green Roofs

Life-cycle assessment was used to evaluate the widespread installation of green roofs in a typical urban mixed-use neighborhood. Market prices of materials, construction, energy conservation, storm-water management, and greenhouse gas GHG emission reductions were used to evaluate private and social costs and benefits. Results suggest green roofs are currently not cost effective on a private cos...

Designed Natural Spaces: Informal Gardens Are Perceived to Be More Restorative than Formal Gardens

Experimental research shows that there are perceived and actual benefits to spending time in natural spaces compared to urban spaces, such as reduced cognitive fatigue, improved mood, and reduced stress. Whereas past research has focused primarily on distinguishing between distinct categories of spaces (i.e., nature vs. urban), less is known about variability in perceived restorative potential ...

Are insect pollinators more generalist than insect herbivores?

Recent community-level studies have acknowledged that generalist species are more widespread than previously thought and highlighted their preponderant impact on community functioning and evolution. It is suggested that the type of interaction, trophic versus mutualistic, should affect species generalization level; however, no direct comparison has been made yet. Here, we performed such a compa...

Carbon sequestration potential of extensive green roofs.

Two studies were conducted with the objective of quantifying the carbon storage potential of extensive green roofs. The first was performed on eight roofs in Michigan and four roofs in Maryland, ranging from 1 to 6 years in age. All 12 green roofs were composed primarily of Sedum species, and substrate depths ranged from 2.5 to 12.7 cm. Aboveground plant material was harvested in the fall of 20...
